OMG! I have so many pictures on my computer and I don’t really know how to create new folders. …

Hey Colleen,

All those jpgs on your desktop of your computer? OOh baby you got some work a head of you. Just want to say that a lot of people are in your shoes in this crazy digital age. Lots of  jpgs and other files, and no organizing system. I know that you use a PC with Windows so I had to consult a friend (thanks Paul!) since I am a Mac person.

So here are my suggestions:

Set aside some time with a nice iced tea and some inspirational music (it would be rock for me!)

First before you do any downloading/importing to your computer, look over the pictures on your camera and delete any ones that aren’t great. You could also do this step after you import them to your computer, but I think that most people will just forget about it at that point.

Next import the pictures the way you normally do with Windows. Now look down on the bottom left side of your screen where you see “Documents”. Underneath it, is a folder called “Pictures”. This is where you should be “capturing” your jpgs. But here is an organizing rule of thumb: create subfolders within folders. You can right-click on your screen to create a new folder. Just make sure that you drag it into its mother folder “Pictures”.

Label each folder by year: 2009, 2010, 2011, etc.. Then within that folder, start creating folders such as, Valentines’ Day 2011, Summer vacation 2011, Vegas Trip 2011, etc. This is how you should be creating and labeling folders all within that “Pictures” folder on your hard drive.

Next, using your cursor, click and drag until all the photos are highlighted of your recent photo import, e.g. Vegas trip 2011. Now drag them all into their newly created folder “Vegas Trip 2011”. Make sure this folder is in the “2011” folder, which is in “Pictures” folder on your hard drive.

Rinse and Repeat with all the other jpgs. Sounds like you kept importing the jpgs so they all landed on top of each other. Well, they might be in some sort of chronological order which might make this task a little easier.

Once you get all your digital photos organized, you can share them with friends and family on online photo albums, such as Shutterfly.com, Flickr.com, et al. (Check out a comparison of these photo sharing sites at photo-sharing-services-review. Or you can download Picasa software for free from Google, edit, organize and create your own online photo albums.

Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Good Luck Honey!
